Take shelter if you need to

The entire North Island and upper South Island is now under heavy rain and/or strong wind warnings and watches as Cyclone Gabrielle hits New Zealand, with the most serious red rain warnings for Auckland, Northland, Coromandel, Waikato, and Gisborne.

For people who need shelter from Cyclone Gabrielle, many Civil Defence Centres and Shelters are now open. Find the nearest to your location here.

What to bring: Warm clothes, medications, items for children and babies, like formula, nappies and toys, and photo identification (if you have it) in your bag. Play it safe. Don’t take any chances.

If you are bringing a pet:

• Dogs – must be on a leash and should be muzzled. You may be asked to keep your dog in your car.

• Cats – must be in a carrier.
